Beloved Before Becoming

Jesus' baptism is a remarkable beginning. Before he taught a single lesson, performed a miracle, or called a disciple, he emerged from the water and heard the words: "You are my beloved." Nothing had been accomplished. Nothing had been proven. Love came first.

How different that is from the story many of us tell ourselves. We imagine we'll be worthy once we've worked harder, succeeded more, fixed our flaws, or finally become the person we think we're supposed to be. In Unity, however, baptism is not about washing away sin. It is a symbolic awakening to the divine life already present within us—a reminder that our true identity isn't earned but revealed. Belovedness is our birthright.

Perhaps that's the invitation today: stop trying to earn what has always been yours. Live from it instead. The world may measure your value by what you accomplish. Spirit asks a different measure entirely: Have you remembered who you are?
