Prayer for Trying Times ~ By Rev. Kurt Condra

My favorite prayers are those written to affirm deeper understanding. My heart is most open when I’m praying for wisdom and understanding. It’s in those moments that I'm most aware of God in me and in all things. That’s why I love the story of Solomon -- especially the part where God makes Solomon king and then asks what he wants. Solomon’s humble answer: an understanding mind. God is so pleased, that Solomon is given more than he asked for: riches and honor for life. (1 Kings 3:5-14).

Spiritual understanding trumps worldly success every time. If we have the sincere desire to serve God first, as Solomon did, blessings of prosperity, health, friendship and love are freely provided. As soon as we let go of how our lives, relationships, finances, bodies ought to be, the peace of God which passes understanding pours through us.
The serenity prayer is a powerful practice for accessing spiritual understanding. I invite you to use it in your own prayer times. If you don’t already know it by heart, try memorizing it. It’s a great tool to employ whenever you find yourself struggling with how things ought to be:

God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change

The courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference.
