Prayer Chaplains

The Prayer Chaplain Program teaches participants to pray with others. If you would  like to pray with others and simultaneously deepen your own prayer practice, we invite you to join our amazing team. It is a unique service that differs from many of the other volunteer opportunities in terms of commitment-level and responsibilities. The following information is provided as a basic introduction to the concept and how it works.

What is  a Unity Prayer Chaplain?
A Unity Chaplain …

  • Supports you on your spiritual journey.
  • Creates and holds a sacred space with you.
  • Listens and holds what is heard in the strictest confidence.
  • Prays with you.

What is the time commitment?
The Unity Prayer Chaplain Team is a service opportunity for those congregants who are truly looking to take the next step in the development of their spiritual maturity and level of commitment in their spiritual growth. As such Unity Pray Chaplains make a one-year commitment in fulfilling their responsibilities. These responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Serving at Sunday services (available for one-on-one prayer following services).
  • 2 hours of Wellness Calling per month (in the church offices).
  • One 1.5-hour meeting per month.
  • Yearly off- and on-site intensive training.

What if I’ve never done anything like this before?
No prior experience in prayer of praying with others is required to serve as a Unity Prayer Chaplain.

You must be an active Unity on the North Shore member who has completed the Membership Class and attended Sunday Recognition. There are a number of classes available here at Unity on the North Shore which will prepare you for this next step in your spiritual journey. Please see “Classes & Workshops” in the Evolve Section. Be willing to deepen your spiritual path through prayer and service by making this commitment to our Prayer Chaplain program.

How does a Unity Prayer Chaplain differ from a Chaplain in a hospital or care facility?
Unlike hospital chaplains, Unity Prayer Chaplains are not ordained and are not trained to counsel people Unity Prayer Chaplains are trained to do three things only: Hold spiritual space, listen and pray. Unity Prayer Chaplains are not trained to go out and “minister” to the community at large but are trained as a lay resource to help meet the pastoral care needs within our Unity community.

How do I find out more information?
If the Unity Prayer Chaplain Program resonates with you and feels like an opportunity you would like to explore further, please plan to attend our Prayer Chaplain Orientation presented each fall. This orientation is mandatory for all of those who do decide to take this next step and attend the training. Please check the training schedule so you can update your calendar as all the training is mandatory to be a Unity Prayer Chaplain. If you have any questions, please call the church at 847-864-8977 and leave a message for Olga La Luz, or seek her out Sunday morning at Unity.
